What is a Magnetic Coupling Used For?

Image
Magnetic shaft coupling provides non-contact torque transfer. They're commonly employed in sealless operations like magnetic drive pumps and magnetic mixers to prevent corrosive, poisonous, or combustible liquids from leaking into the environment. Magnetic drive pumps have no touching elements that allow torque transmission via angular and parallel misalignment. By driving one magnetic hub, torque is imparted magnetically to the other magnetic hub. This can be accomplished using air or a non-magnetic containment boundary such as stainless steel or fibreglass, which completely separates the internal magnetic hub from the outside magnetic hub. What is the mechanism of magnetic shaft couplings? The linked magnets are mounted to two concentric rings on the pump housing on either side of the containment shell. Each ring has the same number of matched and opposing magnets, which are positioned around the ring with alternating poles. The outer ring is connected to the motor's drive...
